music is a safe kind of high

I stumbled upon this little gem of a flower man-child back in 2005 whilst living in the UK. I don’t remember who exactly introduced me to his music. I’d been experimenting with, let’s call them “certain mind altering substances” at the time, hence the gaps in my memory.

But I digress, the first Devendra Banhart album to come into my life was Cripple Crow. His vibrating vocals and dreamfolk/pop vibe made me fall in love with him instantly. His lyrics sway between complex and childlike and at times are indecipherable.

Banhart’s music remained relatively “underground” until he started dating Natalie Portman in 2007 and she starred in his music video for the track Carmensita, off his Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon album. If you haven’t seen the video, have a squiz here:

Apart from providing vocals for Beck’s collaboration Record Club: Song’s of Leonard Cohen and Song’s of Velvet Underground, not much has been heard of from Banhart since his 2009 album What Will We Be. So in saying that, this little rabbit’s waiting on the edge of her seat for her next little sound byte.
