music is a safe kind of high

The Snowdroppers first came to my attention in 2009, when my best friend Charly Brown came home begging me to help her learn how to dance seductively for a music video she was starring in the next day. I still have video footage from that night of her dancing in my bedroom, limbs flailing, with me barking orders “pout, swing your hips, relax your arms, chin down”. But I won’t post that here. That would be cruel. Instead here is the finished product: Run You Down by The Snowdroppers.

Now The Snowdroppers are a four piece from Sydney, who take their name from a 1920’s term which refers to cocaine users. Theirs is a dirty, sexy, rockabilly blues style, which seems to be all the rage amongst the Ned Kelly lookalike hipsters that are running rampant these days. The boys songs stretch from drawn out harmonica chords and Johnny Wishbone’s growling husky vocals, to banjo twangs, foot stomping and lung-bursting bellows.

Fun little fact: Charly dated The Snowdroppers drummer, Cougar, after filming this video. It didn’t work out.

The Snowdroppers seem to be on a perpetual tour up and down the East Coast of Australia, so if the boys happen to hit close to your hometown, I highly recommend you get your little arse along to one of their shows. Their next performance will be held in the Famous Spiegeltent in Melbourne on February 13th. You can book tickets here:
